HP Power Lab: Stages and Timelines

Round 1: Online Assessment

Each team will tackle 45 questions in 30 minutes, covering DI, Analytics, Verbal Ability, Quantitative Skills, Oil and Gas Industry & HPCL-specific questions. The HPCL questions will cover recent developments, business portfolios, strategic initiatives, and other key updates within the company. The final score will be calculated as an average of all team members' performances, meaning every member's participation is crucial.

Welcome to the HP Power Lab—where creativity meets innovation! This competition is all about powering up your ideas to shape a brighter future for India. With the tagline "Ideas for a Viksit Bharat," HP Power Lab challenges you to bring your boldest, most creative concepts to the table, aiming to create impactful solutions that can transform lives and drive India's progress.

In this competition, we aim to gather focused, actionable ideas that align with HPCL’s vision of energy innovation and sustainability. Each theme targets specific challenges and opportunities in the energy sector, and we encourage participants to submit ideas that offer practical solutions tailored to HPCL’s industry focus.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Undergraduate/postgraduate students pursuing a full-time degree are eligible to participate.
  • The participants can either register as individuals or compete in teams of 2-4.
  • One person cannot be a part of more than one team.

Team Formulation Guidelines:

  • Participants must ensure that they choose a name for their team.
  • It is the team leader’s responsibility to ensure that all the team members are eligible to participate in the contest.
  • Violation of the eligibility criteria or team constitution will automatically disqualify the team.
  • HPCL reserves the right to check the validity of the registration information submitted at any point in time.
  • Modification of team members post-registration will not be allowed.
  • Cross-college teams are allowed.
  • Cross-year and cross-specialisation teams are allowed.

Stages:

Round 1: Online Assessment

  • The online assessment window will be open for 8 hours.
  • Each team will face 45 questions in 30 minutes that test their knowledge in areas like Data Interpretation (DI), Analytics, Verbal Ability, Quantitative Skills, as well as specialized questions related to HPCL and the Oil and Gas industry.
  • Points will be awarded based on both accuracy and speed, so answering quickly and correctly is key.
  • The final score will be calculated as an average of all team members' performances, meaning every member's participation is crucial.

Round 2: Executive Summary & Prototype Submission

  • This round emphasizes brainstorming, where team members collaborate to develop an executive case summary that broadly outlines their proposed strategy.
  • Shortlisted teams from the online assessment round will be provided with 5 themes. Teams can choose up to two themes to submit their solutions.
  • For each selected theme, teams must submit a 2-slider PowerPoint presentation that outlines their solution, adhering to the submission template provided to ensure all required elements are included.
  • Teams are required to adhere to the submission template which can be downloaded from the "Download attachments" sections below.
  • Teams also have the option to create a 2-minute pitch video that showcases their idea in a concise, engaging format.
  • Preferred video submission methods include an unlisted YouTube video URL, shareable Google Drive link, WeTransfer link, or any other easily accessible format.
  • A dedicated webinar will be hosted where industry leaders will present the case briefs and directly answer any questions participants may have.

Round 3: Detailed Presentation Submission

  • Each team will submit a comprehensive 7-slide PowerPoint presentation outlining their solution in detail.

Round 4: Virtual Semi-Finale

  • Shortlisted teams from the detailed presentation round will have the opportunity to present their innovative solutions directly to the esteemed HPCL jury.
  • Following the presentation, teams will engage in a dynamic Q&A session with the jury.

Round 5: Grand Conclave

  • Before the grand conclave, shortlisted teams will participate in a mentorship round where HPCL leaders will provide guidance and insights to help refine and strengthen their solutions.
  • The top teams from the virtual semi-final will be invited to present their solutions in person to the esteemed jury. 
  • After the presentations, the jury will evaluate each team's solution based on creativity, feasibility, and impact. The top 3 teams will be announced, marking the culmination of this exciting journey.

About Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) was formed on July 15, 1974. HPCL is a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) with annual gross sales of ₹4,59,815 crore during 2023-24. On January 31, 2018, the Government of India transferred its 51.11% equity stake in HPCL to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). As of June 2024, ONGC (Promoter & Promoter Group) holds 54.9% of HPCL’s shares, with the remaining 45.1% held by others.

HPCL achieved the highest-ever sales volume of 46.8 MMT and processed a record 22.3 million tonnes of crude during 2023-24, with 103% refinery capacity utilization and the highest-ever pipeline throughput of 25.8 MMT. HPCL holds approximately 20.29% market share in India and has a strong presence in refining and marketing petroleum products. During 2023-24, HPCL recorded its highest-ever standalone PAT of ₹14,694 crore.

HPCL owns and operates refineries in Mumbai (9.5 MMTPA) and Visakhapatnam (13.7 MMTPA). It also owns the largest lube refinery in India, located in Mumbai, with a capacity of 428 TMTPA. HPCL holds a 48.99% equity stake in HMEL, which operates an 11.3 MMTPA capacity refinery in Punjab, and a 16.96% stake in MRPL, which operates a 15 MMTPA capacity refinery in Karnataka.

HPCL’s extensive marketing network includes 19 Zonal Offices in major cities and 145 Regional Offices, supported by a supply and distribution infrastructure comprising 43 Terminals/Installations/Tap Off Points, 57 Aviation Fuel Stations, 56 LPG Bottling Plants, 4 Lube Blending Plants, and 71 Depots including lube depots. HPCL’s customer touchpoints include 22,308 Retail Outlets, 1,638 SKO/LDO dealers, 335 Bazar Lube distributors, 144 Industrial Lube Distributors, 1,776 CNG facilities at Retail Outlets, 3,780 EV charging stations, 830 Door-to-door delivery dispensers, and 6,363 LPG distributorships, serving over 9.67 crore LPG consumers as of August 2024.

HPCL has the second-largest petroleum product pipeline network in India, with a length of 5,134 km. HPCL is engaged in Exploration & Production (E&P) of hydrocarbons through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Prize Petroleum Company Limited (PPCL). It also operates through 20 joint ventures and subsidiaries across the oil and gas value chain.

HPCL’s Research & Development Centre, ‘HP Green R&D Centre,’ located in Bengaluru, provides advanced technical support to Refineries and Marketing SBUs, absorbing and developing new technologies, licensing innovations, and serving as a knowledge hub. HPCL is committed to environmental preservation, sustainable development, workplace safety, and improving the quality of life for employees, customers, and the community. Category-wise Products & Services:

  • Aviation: HPCL supplies Jet Fuel to major airlines (such as Air India, IndiGo, Oman Air, British Airways, Gulf Air, etc.), charter customers (such as Air Charter Pvt. Ltd., U Y Aviation, etc.) and Government accounts (such as of Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Coast Guard etc.).
  • Bulk Fuels & Specialities: marketing of Bulk fuels & Petroleum products directly to Industrial consumers like power plants, chemicals, fertilizers, shipping companies, and airlines.
  • International Trade: main activities of International Trade & Shipping (IT&S) relate to Crude Oil imports, Export of Petroleum Products, etc.
  • LPG (HP Gas): HPCL’s brand of LPG, HP Gas has 48 LPG Bottling Plants throughout the country with a total capacity of over 3610 thousand metric tonnes per annum (TMTPA)
  • Lubes (HP Lubes): manufacturing Automotive Oils, Industrial Oils, Spatiality Oils, Greases, and Marine Oils.
  • Retail: a dedicated network of Retail Outlets delivering Diesel, Petrol, Turbojet, Power, AutoLPG, CNG and lubricants
  • Product Pipelines: the most cost-effective, energy efficient, safe and environment-friendly mode of transportation of petroleum products stretching a total of 3,371 Kms.
  • Alternate Energy: Wind Power and Solar Power.

Joint Ventures:

  • HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd. (HMEL): of HPCL and Mittal Energy Investments Pte Ltd., Singapore, to operate a refinery of 11.3 MMTPA capacity at Bathinda, Punjab. Equity holding of 48.99% each.
  • Hindustan Colas Pvt Ltd. (HINCOL): of HPCL and M/s Colas S.A. of France to produce and market Bitumen Emulsions and modified Bitumen. Equity shareholding of 50% each.
  • South Asia LPG Co Pvt. Ltd. (SALPG): of HPCL and Total Holding India to operate an underground LPG storage cavern of 60 TMT capacity and associated receiving & despatch facilities at Visakhapatnam. Equity holding of 50% each.
  • Bhagyanagar Gas Ltd. (BGL): of HPCL and GAIL with equal equity holding of 49.97% each.
  • Aavantika Gas Ltd.: between HPCL and GAIL with equal equity holding of 49.98% each.
  • Petronet MHB Ltd. (PMHBL): a joint venture of HPCL and ONGC with equity shareholding of 32.72% each and balance 34.56% of equity is being held by banks. 
  • Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL): of HPCL and ONGC wherein ONGC holds 71.63% of equity, HPCL holds 16.96% of equity and balance equity is held by the public.
  • Mumbai Aviation Fuel Farm Facility Pvt. Ltd. (MAFFFL): a joint venture of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL), and HPCL with equity holding of 25% each.
  • GSPL India Gasnet Ltd (GIGL): of Gujarat State Petronet Ltd. (GSPL)(52%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL)(26%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL)(11%) and HPCL(11%).
  • GSPL India Transco Ltd (GITL): of Gujarat State Petronet Ltd. (GSPL)(52%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL)(26%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL)(11%) and HPCL(11%).
  • HPCL Shapoorji Energy Pvt. Ltd. (HSEPL): between HPCL and SP Ports Pvt. Ltd. with equity shareholding of 50% each.
  • Godavari Gas Pvt. Ltd. (GGPL): a joint venture between Andhra Pradesh Gas Distribution Corporation Limited (APGDC) and HPCL with an equity stake in the ratio of 74:26.
  • Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (RRPCL): joint venture company promoted by IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL with equity participation in the ratio of 50:25:25.

Mergers & Acquisitions

  • Prize Petroleum: the balance 50% of the shares of Prize Petroleum held by the other joint venture partners of HPCL were acquired by HPCL in April 2011, with the aim to merge Prize Petroleum with itself after it becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary.

Acquisition by ONGC

The country’s largest oil and gas producer announced on February 1, 2018, the acquisition of government-owned fuel retailer Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) through an all-cash deal worth ₹36,915 crore. This deal was a result of the Government's objective to combine the various central public enterprises to give them the capacity to bear higher risks, avail economies of scale, take more eminent investment choices and generate more value for the stakeholders and build an 'Oil Major' which will be capable of matching the capacity of global and domestic private sector oil and gas corporations.
