A US-based beverage brand with its reach all over the world, PepsiCo Beverages North America (PBNA)  has roots that go back to 1898, when Caleb Bradham, a North Carolina based entrepreneur invented Pepsi-Cola and sold it to his pharmacy shoppers. 

Headquartered in the Hamlet of Purchase in Harrison, New York, this American multinational food, snack, and beverage corporation, was formed by the merger of Frito Lay and Pepsi Cola Company in the year 1965, the year Herman Lay, the then CEO of Frito-Lay and Donald Kendall, the then CEO of Pepsi-Cola, recognized this merger as a ‘match made in heaven’. As of December 2018, the company is led by Ramon Laguarta as its CEO and employs around 267,000 people around the world, including approximately 114,000 people within the United States.

PepsiCo entered the Indian market in 1989 and in a short period it has grown into one of the largest MNC food and beverage businesses in the country. Mergers & Acquisitions:

  • In 1965, PepsiCo Inc. was formed by the merger of Pepsi-Cola and Frito-Lay.
  • In 1977, PepsiCo acquired Pizza Hut, Inc.
  • In 1978, PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell
  • In 1986, PepsiCo purchases Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), for $850 million, a move that would vault it into the Number 2 position in the fiercely contested fast-food industry as well.
  • In1991, Pepsi-Cola constituted a joint venture with Unilever for expansion of tea-based beverages
  • In 1994, PepsiCo and Starbucks form the North American Coffee Partnership to jointly develop ready to drink coffee beverages. The partners plan to capitalize on Starbucks’ experience and reputation in specialty coffee and Pepsi’s huge bottling and distribution system.
  • In 1998, PepsiCo acquired Tropicana Products from Seagram Company Limited
  • In 2017, PepsiCo and Suntory established a joint venture based in Thailand, to build on PepsiCo’s influential existing status in Thailand and to generate further expansion possibilities for both groups in the market.
  • In 2018, PepsiCo acquired countertop carbonated water machine maker, SodaStream for $3.2 billion- the snacking and beverage giant’s latest move to add healthier products to its portfolio and push a more environmentally friendly agenda.
  • In March 2020, PepsiCo declared that it had entered into an agreement to undertake Rockstar Energy.

Initiatives:

  • Reducing GHG Emissions: From Seed To Shelf- PepsiCo has set ambitious targets to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions, aiming to cut them by 20% (35 MM Tones) by 2030.
